Talk to your merchants before you start building. most merchants are starved of contact with affiliates so they'll be happy of the interest. Don't put too much effort into redesigning it for one merchant, that way if you get rejected you can apply to another merchant with a site in place. After that it's easy to show other sites to a merchant and say "here's what I'm planning to do, but using another domain" basically ask first.
