Is there a chicken and egg situation with getting affiliate registration.

If like in this case you are building your first site and want to base it on a particular merchant’s products, do you go ahead and build a mock up of the intended website first with example content and then give them that site in your application or can you have either no website or an empty website when you apply.

The downside is if you go through the time and expense of buying a keyword related domain name and building an example site and they refuse, then its wasted effort etc.

What’s the normal procedure when your building your initial accounts with no working website for your affiliate applications ?

There is a bit of catch 22 what I’d do is build a site like this one on a generic domain name, which has alternative merchants. Don’t put too much effort into redesigning it for one merchant, that way if you get rejected you can apply to another merchant with a site in place.

After that it’s easy to show other sites to a merchant and say “here’s what I’m planning to do, but using another domain” basically ask first.

Brings up another point. Talk to your merchants before you start building. most merchants are starved of contact with affiliates so they’ll be happy of the interest. If they can’t be bothered to discuss your plans and give pointers, don’t promote them. It won’t be a good relationship.
