Following my post on choosing an email system the following, is a useful little checklist if you are running one on your own servers, or to ask the IT guys at your hosted provider about.
- A properly configured mail server
- Reverse DNS correctly configured
- Correct MX records setup
- an SPF record/SenderID record
- Correct To and From: records in the mail that match the lookup that the receiving server will inevitably check
- structuring the content and headers in accordance with WC3 and email RFC standards
- remove bounces regularly - keeping a clean list
- acknowledge unsubscribe requests promptly
- Whitelist with as many ISPs as possible
Thanks to Jon Bovard for his suggestions for this list. Jon has also pointed out a new trend in ISP’s judging your list…age.
It seems many ISP’s are now employing a “policy of guilty until proven innocent” and you need to stay whiter than white for a longer period of time before you can start to expect 100% delivery of your emails. Not much fun for new businesses, but another example of how a long-standing reliable brand is becoming as important on the web as on the high street.
