I’ve just finished reading “the Victorian Internet“, a historyof the telegraph that makes quite interesting reading to anone involved in the early days of online.
My favourite bit was the description of telegraph ‘nicknames’, shortened names you could buy t o reresent your physical address that would cost less (telegrams are charged by the word) and be easier to remember. Within a year of setting up the scheme over 36,000 had been registered!
A great book, that teaches you that online fraud, internet vicars, gambling and premium subscription content models are all at least 150 years old.
